Hunter S. Thompson

I'm not familiar with Hunters work, but all i can say is that he sounded like a man who didn't take shit from anyone, and lived his life the way he wanted to, got have respect for anyone who can do that.

RIP Hunter.

archive dip #2

This was the last post i did under the previous incarnation of Slacker Chronicles, it wasn't up for long because i was fucking around with the template after posting it.
My over-generous brother has given me his copy of Metallica's "Some Kind of Monster" dvd. This is one helluva documentary, being a fan of the band since my mid-teens it was a real eye opener. Somehow though in the back of my mind i couldn't help thinking that this was some marketing ploy from a band who had lost their way after the "Black" album (i wasn't a fan of their Load / Re-Load stuff, more old-school Metalli-fan), and needed to get back some artistic credibility.

Secondly i successfully bid on ebay for a film called "Dark Days", a truly independent film by Marc Singer. The only reason i heard about this was because of DJ Shadows involvement with the soundtrack. It follows the lives of the people who lived underground in New York, living beside the tube tracks around Penn Station. It was a real eye opener.

I also got re-aquainted with a favourite film of mine called "Dead Mans Curve". I remember seeing this for the first time back in 2001 before heading off on my travels. Last time i watched it i was with my ex, and we split not long after so i had some shitty emotions linked with it. But a really good film shouldn't be sidelined purely by what emotions you associate with it. Hasn't really aged well, but Matthew Lillards performance is top notch. I've just seen his new film "Without a Paddle", it's one of those MTV funded movies, and, well, it's shite, not just shite, fucking shite.

I need a sandwich.

(I did actually go and get a sandwich for those interested).

teeth, necessary evil

Woke up this mornin' feelin' fine! So i knew something was wrong straight away, considering my last thoughts before sleep finally got a hold of me was "i wish this pain in my tooth would fuck off". So lying there i rolled my tongue around the tooth and gum, and there it was, a lump. I trotted off to the bathroom mirror, lo and behold there was an abscess looking back at me from my gum line. Looks as though as the nerve in my tooth has died, and the bacteria inside has mananged to turn evil and make this rather fine inflammation. Needless to say as i poked it with my finger all manner of pus came out. Dentist appointment made, took one look and said "extraction or keep it", of course i chose keep it, considering the last time my dentist gave me an option (about 3 weeks ago when the nerve was in the midst of dying and causing me a shit load of pain) he reckoned that extraction could be very tricky, and root canal would be the obvious choice. So no pain now, and the root canal is around about a month away. Joy.

Anyway here is a review of an X Factor gig held at Wembley, made me feel better.

DAMMIT and i completely forgot to mention that the Doves have released their new album (last Monday 21st) called "Some Cities", and is well worth your hard earned *insert currency here*, may i recommend this site as the point of purchasing?

Stay random classy people.

pressure (archive dip #1)

Damn this tooth of mine, i thought after a week of painkillers i'd managed to kill the bastard nerve a couple of weeks back. But no it has returned, not as bad as before, but i can't chew on the tooth as any pressure just sends out pain. Nice. Fucking tooth. Roll on my root canal, that'll teach the bastard. Anyway here is the first dip into my archive, it's only a couple of weeks old but i'm still trying to spread the message to check out Jimmy Smith.

jimmy smith r.i.p.

One of the basslines i've been attempting to learn, and frustratingly i'm still nowhere near recreating it, is from a track by the Beastie Boys called Root Down. A real classy funky bassline (also their track "Alright Hear This" also contains a cracker) they pretty much sampled their track Root Down wholesale from the Jimmy Smith (1 & 2) track of the same name. As a tribute? I don't know, but i'd like to think so.

Jimmy Smith passed away yesterday at the age of 79. RIP.

I'm off to attach a piece of string to a door handle, and the other end to my tooth, knowing my luck it'll result in me extracting my entire lower jaw.

Stay classy random people.

so what happened?

Last week i was messing around with the template, which resulted in me deleting my entire list of links, and all the modifications i'd made over the 6 months or so i'd been posting, it sort of took the wind out of my sails. I was also getting bored with the blog, essentially it was just filled with me going on about my woes without really having much to say, bordering on being almost narcissistic. So i copied all the archives, deleted the blog and now intend to start again.
